A LARGE character home with a court and pool attracted Mark Douglas to a historic Church Rd property 15 years ago, and the enviable lifestyle it offers has kept him there ever since.

Mr Douglas was looking for a character home where his three daughters could grow up and live an active lifestyle when he found it in 2001, and the home has not failed to delight.

“It was the court and pool and the opportunity to bring up three girls there that really appealed to me,” Mr Douglas says.

“It’s great for parties and my friend and I play tennis there on a Sunday morning, so it’s great for a whole range of different outdoor activities.”

The bluestone-wrapped home, the first to be built on prestigious Church Rd in the 1880s, has five bedrooms and is set on an 1824sqm block.

The master suite has a fireplace, a walk-in robe and an ensuite with shower, double vanity and a toilet.

Two of the other four bedrooms have fireplaces and one is set below the kitchen and provides access to the home’s cellar and opens to the outdoor entertainment area.

The kitchen – which features white cabinetry, ample cupboard and benchspace, Caesarstone benchtops, overhead cabinetry, a servery to the living room, a double sink and Miele appliances including a wall mounted stainless steel oven and microwave – is set at the rear of the home and opens to the dining room and family room. It is a room which Mr Douglas says has been greatly enjoyed over the years.

“The family room and informal eating area gets drenched in north-facing sun in the winter and it’s just lovely to be there on a cool day because the sun really warms up that whole area,” Mr Douglas says.

The home has a large elevated outdoor entertainment area at the rear overlooking an inground, salt chlorinated solar heated pool, spa and a floodlit full-sized synthetic tennis court. It is surrounded by low-maintenance, established gardens with automated sprinklers.

“Sunsets on the deck are fantastic because as the sun sets it lights up the gum trees on the side of the court, and it’s just spectacular,” Mr Douglas says.

Character features abound throughout the property including polished jarrah floorboards, ornate ceilings, cornices and skirtings; french doors, leadlight features, plantation shutters and feature fireplaces.

The home, which features a security system, also has a combination of ducted and split-system reverse-cycle heating and cooling throughout and the double garage has remote entry and roller door access to the rear patio.

Mr Douglas says the Mitcham home’s location is second-to-none.

“It’s very close to Brown Hill Creek Recreation Park, so in just minutes you’re in the scrub,” Mr Douglas says. “You really get the best of both worlds because you’re close to the Hills and bush, but less than 10 minutes from the city, so it’s outstanding.”

Mr Douglas says he will miss the home but hopes it will be enjoyed by another family looking to enjoy an active lifestyle and entertaining.

“It’s like a resort and a great place for the family to just be together, I’ve really loved it and will miss it,” Mr Douglas says.
